Bill to Abolish Privatized Prisons The United States was founded on the principles of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. The idea of profiting off of imprisoning people inherently goes against these core American values. Rather than rehabilitation and restoring individuals to society, for-profit prisons prioritize financial gain. This incentivizes the imprisonment of more people, longer sentences, and inhumane living conditions in order to cut costs and increase profit margins. Moreover, the presence of for-profit prisons creates a conflict of interest. Private prison companies have a financial interest in keeping their facilities filled with inmates, which contradicts the goal of reducing crime and recidivism rates. This perverse incentive can lead to policies that focus on punishment rather than rehabilitation, despite evidence showing that rehabilitation and education programs are the most effective means of reducing recidivism rates.
